A Visit to the Hanson - December 1972
From a Kid's Perspective
Photos by Pat Fernicola
Humor by Larry Newman
In December 1972, Pat Fernicola, along with five Fernicola children and Norman Martin
(RD3, 1951-54) and his five children, along with their spouses, had the privilege
of visiting the USS Hanson in San Diego just a few months before her decommissioning.
The photos below were taken at that time. The humor associated with these photos is
in no way intended to denigrate either people or vessel. We thank Pat for
sharing these pics with us.

Before we go on board...
Before we go on board...
Ok kids, this is the ship Pat and I served on. Its the USS Hanson DD 832, a destroyer.
Now all of you be on your best behavior when we go on board, don't touch anything, OK?
Smile, that nice man up there is taking our picture too.

What Did Dad Say?
What Did Dad Say?
Our Dads said this is the USS Hanson. They told us to look but don't touch. Like,
yeah! Not in their life time! They said this is called a tin can. Don't look
like the cans Mom has in her pantry. Well, maybe the dents.

Of Planks & Quarters
Of Planks & Quarters
We found this cute little car and thought our Dads should have their picture
taken with it. Saab, Saab. Not really! This is where you go on board.
Our Dads said you have to walk the plank to get on, and there's this
deck with quarters on it! Wow!

We want our picture taken with the Saab too! What's that behind us? That's
the USS Hanson DD 832. Our Dads' cool ship.

Hello! Excuse me sir! You there in the yellow shirt (Pat).
Would you please untie that rope at your feet there.
We want to go play ships.

What's next?
Well kids, says Norman, we've trashed the hell out of this one,
which one shall we take on next?
